300px Channel Tunnel NRM Make European Train Travel Easier With A Eurorail Pass

Image via Wikipedia

Eurorail tickets and passes have greatly simplified travel throughout the entire continent, which is a great boon to those traveling in from overseas. Although Europe’s rail network has always had a degree of integration, with lines on the same scale and trains able to cross from one country to another without any problem, there has always been a limit on what was possible. With so many different countries and languages in a relatively small area, it was inevitable that there would be some difficulties in pricing and ticket availability.

These difficulties are largely behind us, and there are several contributory factors to that. The development of the European Union over the past forty years has made many aspects of European life easier for both locals and tourists. Now, much of Europe operates with a single currency, the Euro, and that makes the pricing of railway journeys which go through several countries so much easier. It has also lessened the need for visas to be checked moving from one country to another, although you will still need to show your passport.

One of the most significant developments of recent times has been the opening of the Channel Tunnel in the early nineties, which has effectively connected Great Britain to the European continent. Now, if you are planning a railway tour across the European continent, you can easily include London and even the provincial cities beyond. Although Britain has not adopted the single currency, this will not pose too much of a problem as the transfer from Euros to pounds is a simple enough matter.

Along with the integration of the European continent has come the dramatic rise of the Internet. This has made the accessing of information and the booking of tickets much easier than before. Now, you can book your travel in advance before you even set foot in Europe, and have it all charged to your debit or credit card. The fact that web pages can easily be translated into many languages means that anyone can access the system, although English is the default language anyway. Being able to book in advance saves you time when you arrive in Europe, and it can also save you money.

European train travel is still partially fragmented, as separate countries cannot agree on some standards. The fast trains which run in northern France, for example, do not continue into Britain or Germany as these countries have their own competing technology. The German maglev trains, which can travel at 300 miles an hour, have not been implemented anywhere despite being a mature technology. There are further improvements which can be made, but the system as it is today has been made far more easy to use than before. Take advantage of the Eurorail pass, with will save you money, and also save you time on buying individual tickets. Make the most of your European vacation by using Eurorail.

As someone who has a very keen interest in the travel industry, I always like to look at the latest trends. It’s always interesting to see where people choose to go on their holidays. Official statistics can often provide a useful insight, while we can also learn plenty by talking to friends, family and work colleagues.

Looking specifically at where people choose to travel within Europe, it’s clear that preferences are changing. When people leave the United Kingdom, it’s long been the case that they tend to head for the two countries that are most popular with British holidaymakers. These are, of course, France and Spain.

There are a number of reasons why these countries have historically been popular as destinations. Partly it’s all about these with which we can reach them. France is a particularly easy country to getting, thanks to the excellent transport links between France and the UK. Spain, although being a little farther away, has benefited from the fact that it offers a great climate and relatively cheap prices.

Although both of these locations remain popular, we’ve seen people looking to travel to alternative destinations. In some cases, people have become bored with visiting the same old locations. As a result, they’ve been looking at alternatives. It helps, of course, that cheaper flights have made more areas of Europe easily accessible to holidaymakers.

So which parts of the continent have become more popular in recent years? There’s no doubt that more and more people are looking in an easterly direction. Countries such as Poland, Hungary and the Czech Republic were once barely thought of as being places that many people would wish to visit. These days, however, they are increasingly being seen as mainstream destinations.

Flights to these places are certainly falling in price and costs are often lower when it comes to dining out and being entertained. But this isn’t all about price. That immediately becomes clear when you talk to people who visit these countries. The reality is that the countries of eastern Europe have an enormous amount to offer.

They often combine historic cities, beautiful countryside and wonderful culture. They are rivalling more traditional holiday locations in all areas. This trend looks set to continue and we may even see people looking to travel to other destinations that have, up until now, possibly seemed rather obscure.

Image by Márcio Cabral de Moura via Flickr

When it comes to train travel Europe was never the easiest place to negotiate. There was always the inevitable language barrier to overcome, there was the constant need to be showing passport and visa papers to border guards and officials, and there was the added problem of trying to work out the optimal fares and ticket options for journeys which went through several countries. The good news is that European train travel is easier now than it has ever been, although it is still not as trouble free as travel within a unified area should be.

The most dramatic change of all has come for those living in Great Britain, or those who wish to include Britain as part of their travel itinerary. That change is, of course, the Channel Tunnel, which has  effectively connected Great Britain to the rest of the continent. Now, it is possible to travel by train from London, or any of the other major cities, to Paris and even beyond. It is no longer necessary to use a ferry or air transport to negotiate the English Channel. You can even drive your car on to a train in England, and drive it off in France.

If you are seeking fast rail travel Europe is lagging behind Japan, but parts of it are showing what can be done. Trains in northern France, which link to the Channel Tunnel, are running at the average speed for Japanese trains. The main problem with travel rail Europe style is that there is no unified body planning the entire system, and critical decisions are made in different governmental centers. The Transrapid company of Essen in Germany, for example, has produced magnetic levitating trains which can travel at 300 miles an hour.

This technology, which could revolutionize train travel in Europe, has now been established for twenty years. It is no recent innovation. To be implemented on the continent of Europe, you would need a Europe-wide agreement, and some countries are simply not going to allow this to happen. France, which has an economic stake in alternative fast heavy rail technology, is one of these. Despite these drawbacks caused by a lack of unification, European train travel works surprisingly well.

The Internet has made a great difference to the ease with which consumers are able to plan their journeys. Web pages can be translated into different languages, so virtually any rail journey in Europe can be booked in English on a website, and paid for with a credit or debit card. This ease of  booking has made train Europe travel a lot more accessible to visitors, who are now able to take advantage of the discounts which can often be gained by booking well in advance. If you plan your trip well in advance, you will get the best value from train travel Europe.
